Both ships named Friendship and Tigger Moth set off from Mexico on the 20th of March.

A large-scale search and rescue effort is actively ongoing in the Caribbean Sea for a pair of lost sailboats loaded with humanitarian supplies en route from Mexico to Havana.

Military Rescue Operations Initiated

The Mexican government has deployed naval teams and military search aircraft to find the two vessels, which were had on board a minimum of nine personnel, per a navy statement.

The boats had been expected to make landfall in Havana on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and no official word of their docking, authorities reported.

Context of Aid to the Nation

Cuba has relied heavily on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the last several weeks, as the country struggles through multiple national electricity failures.

"Both skippers and their teams are veteran seafarers, and the two ships are equipped with suitable safety systems and communication devices," a spokesperson for the convoy commented.

The nine-person crew are nationals of Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Mexico said it has been in touch with coast guard agencies from each country along with their diplomatic representatives.

"Our team is collaborating completely with the officials and are still optimistic in the capability of the sailors to make it to Cuba without incident," the official further stated.

Recent Relief Delivery

Earlier in the week, the government in Havana warmly welcomed and greeted with fanfare another boat that had delivered 14 tons of relief supplies to the nation.

That boat, dubbed "Granma 2.0" following the name of the boat in which Castro came back to Cuba to start the revolution in the 1950s, delivered solar equipment, pharmaceuticals, formula milk, cycles and provisions.

Broader Geopolitical Climate

Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have primarily led efforts to ship critical assistance to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, when a energy blockade on the Communist-run nation was initiated.

The United Nations have since raised alarms about ""critical" lack of essential goods, with more than 50k surgeries called off in Cuba amid energy rationing.

Foreign policy pressure have been ramped up over the past months, with remarks from various officials highlighting the complex situation regarding diplomatic ties.

Reacting to recent statements, a senior government figure declared that "the socialist system of Cuba is non-negotiable."

Indications suggest that initial phases of talks had begun, although their current progress remains not publicly known.

The naval forces affirmed it was pledged to using the full extent of its capabilities at its reach to locate the vessels and ensure the well-being of the sailors.

To date, there has been no official comment on the lost ships by the Cuban leadership.
