The Divinity Developer Explains Its Use of Generative AI for Upcoming Project

The team behind popular RPGs like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin recently shown its new project, sparking a wave of excitement within the gaming community. However, follow-up statements from the studio's co-founder have introduced clarity to the conversation, touching on the developer's approach toward generative artificial intelligence.

AI as a Creative Assistant, Not a Substitute

In a new clarification, Swen Vincke explained that the team is employing machine learning for specific ancillary purposes. These involve developing PowerPoint slides, generating rough concept art, and drafting draft copy.

Crucially, Vincke made clear that the shipping assets in the game will be crafted solely by actual creatives. "Larian is creating everything ourselves," he affirmed.

Our studio is actively growing our pool of concept artists and are actively putting together dedicated writer rooms.

Since visual development is being specifically referenced — we right now have 23 concept artists and have job openings for more artists.

All our efforts we do is additive and focused on letting our team spend more time on the creative process.

Any machine learning application used well is additive to a artist's routine, not a replacement for their craft.

Addressing Concerns and Clarifying the Vision

The news of using AI originally generated unease among portions of the player base. In response, Vincke issued additional elaboration on social media.

"Our team utilizes AI tools to explore references, in the same way we use Google and physical media," he explained. "During the initial brainstorming phase we use it as a simple sketch for structure which we then swap out with hand-crafted artwork."

He noted, "Our studio recruits artists for their creative vision, not for their willingness to execute what a algorithm proposes."

Three Pillars of Practical Application

Vincke had previously broken down the company's focused method to machine learning, grouping its use into key areas:

  • Automation of Tedious Tasks: Areas like refining animations, dialogue cleanup, and Larian-specific work like adjusting assets for various species.
  • Accelerated Iteration: Using tools to rapidly prototype rough versions of scenarios to test concepts before full development.
  • Future Potential for Gameplay: Researching how AI could in the future facilitate innovative gameplay, especially in creating dynamic reactions in a detailed game universe.

He clearly affirmed that core creative domains — including music composition — are are absolutely not areas where the studio is reducing human talent. Conversely, Larian is actively hiring in these exact positions.

"We are not shipping a game with AI-generated content, nor planning on cutting staff to swap them out with AI," Vincke stated definitively.
