The Details Known Concerning the Fatalities of the Bondi Shooting
No fewer than 16 individuals perished and more than 40 sustained injuries when gunmen opened fire at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police have called a terrorist attack.
According to the most recent information, officials have stated the number of fatalities is 16, encompassing one of the suspected attackers. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were taken to medical facilities.
Those who died have not yet been publicly named, but authorities state their ages range from 10 and 87 years of age.
Here are the individuals who are known to date.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Reportedly a father-of-five, he served as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member remarked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.
She described the events before the attack, stating they were standing when the shooting erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.
The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having faced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
The French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
In a statement, a senior official declared that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the message continued.
One Child
A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was among those killed during the attack, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
From the 42 people taken to hospitals, many remain receiving treatment, with five in critical condition. Those hurt include two officers who responded to the attack.
One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.
“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
