The city's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to make his home in the traditional Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the rent-stabilised apartment that sparked debate during his campaign.

An Iconic Home

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the official residence for most New York City mayors from the mid-20th century.

But, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a key issue, was not quick to announce he would live there immediately following his triumph in November.

"This decision came down to the security of my family and the need to directing my full attention on carrying out the platform on affordability voters voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared in his announcement.

Thanking a Neighborhood

He resided in the Astoria neighbourhood, a district renowned for its diverse immigrant communities and international dining.

"To the people of Astoria: many thanks for showing us the true spirit of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"Although my address will change in Astoria, Astoria will always live within me and the work I do," he said.

Campaign Controversy

During his race for mayor, Mamdani tied his core platform – halting rent increases – to his own housing situation.

Yet his rivals, including former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for living in the affordable housing despite the fact that he came from a famous family.

A House Not Always Used

Not every mayor have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, kept his residence in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side during his three terms, which concluded in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg said he believed it should be a place for official events, and advocated for an extensive renovation of the older mansion.

A Stately Residence

As he settles into Gracie Mansion near his first day on 1 January, he will be surrounded by a setting very different than his previous Astoria apartment.

With its cream-colored walls, emerald shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure overlooking the East River.

Internally, the ground floor of the Federal-style mansion is furnished consistent with the home's original era.

The compound, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also boasts fortified protections to protect the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

A number of people have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that they experienced doors opening and shutting on their own, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "No matter the skeptics say," he declared in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

The apartment he is leaving is rent-stabilized, which means the city regulates on how much landlords can hike the monthly cost each year.

Tenants see such units as valuable lifelines as the cost of housing outpaces the means of many residents.

It was reported Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to the property website Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
