New York Jets Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Shooting

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will recover well after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “in good spirits” during their recent conversation.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn commented. “His wife and his kid, they are holding up and he is expected to recover fully.”

The coach did not know when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where he has been listed as critical but stable.

“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “But I will say this, from our conversation, he seemed very positive. Once more, that puts my mind at ease, that he feels like that and he’s talking that way.”

New York police issued security footage earlier this week of an individual wanted in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries as confirmed by officials.

The incident occurred just after 2am on Sunday morning in the area between MSG and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was admitted to a medical center after being shot in the abdomen, police said. The assailant escaped.

Glenn shared Boyd has occupied his thinking “a ton” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a baby.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,” Glenn noted. “And I’m thinking about his wife, I’m thinking about his kid and my priority is his well-being. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There is a procedure involved, I’ll keep private, but I am pleased that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd was inactive in the present campaign, his first with the Jets, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with a shoulder issue that required surgery.

He signed with New York as a free agent in March and was anticipated to become a key part of an improved special teams group under Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during preseason drills on August 2 and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd continued to be present during the entire campaign while working his way back.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn commented. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. He is completely involved. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, a Texas native, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of UT in the 2019 draft. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in last year and then joined Houston’s practice squad after that. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with the Jets in March.
