The courageous student returned a explosive device from militant forces before being taken hostage in the attack on Israel in the recent conflict, states the other Nepalese student he rescued.

"I would not have endured if both grenades had exploded. Bipin showed bravery and hurled the grenade away," the survivor shared with news sources.

The survivor was speaking after the defense forces identified his companion's body as being among four deceased captives handed back by Hamas under the recent truce agreement.

Bipin was twenty-three and working on a agricultural community when he was seized by Hamas into captivity along with 250 others on 7 October 2023. It remains unknown the circumstances of he passed away.

The student's family and friends prayed right up to the negotiation cutoff that he might be among surviving hostages released on the specified date, but he wasn't, and a subsequent day their worst fears were confirmed.

The Attack

The student, Dhan Bahadur and 15 other Nepalese farming students had been in Israel for just over a short period when their residence was assaulted.

"We were aware that there could be a conflict in Israel. But we had little expectation that there could be any ground attack of that magnitude," the survivor explained. "They thought that there could be aerial strikes and we would be protected if we remained underground, in the shelters."

For the students who'd been invited under the national "educational initiative" it was a great chance to make better lives for their futures and their loved ones in Nepal.

The survivor credits his survival to Bipin's heroic actions.

"During of attack, multiple explosives were launched near the shelters. He [Bipin] picked up a device and hurled it outside; one exploded inside. Because of that explosion, myself and four others were wounded," he says.

"Bipin was unharmed at that point. If the two grenades had exploded, I certainly would not have been speaking with you like this."

10 of the Nepalese students were lost in the assault. Bipin was the sole person captured.

"We saw each other for the last time when he and fellow students were being shifted to another bunker," the survivor explains. "Because, after the wounding, could not move and I stayed in the initial shelter. I came to know that there were multiple assaults in the shelter where he took refuge and was was taken prisoner from that location."

Remembering Bipin

The 27-year-old says he feels profound grief after hearing about his colleague's passing. Dhan Bahadur and his companion were classmates in Far Western University School of Agriculture in Tikapur, Nepal.

"We made every attempts from our sides to ensure his freedom. They did all we could. But recently, we had to face such devastating news. The entire nation is in grief. Personally do not know how to express. Truly have no words to explain my sorrow."

The survivor says his friend and fellow colleagues had the identical aspiration of making modest savings and establishing their own enterprise after returning from the exchange programme in Israel.

"Bipin enjoyed playing football and sports. We would chat for extended periods about our goals and dreams. He wanted to achieve his body in good shape and to buy a latest mobile phone. We even created a musical piece about friendship with my device. Bipin also spoke about showcasing himself in a music video."

Recent Developments

On the specified date, the Israeli military said they suspected Bipin Joshi was "killed in captivity during the initial period of the conflict". There exists no way of independently confirming that.

But should this be the case, the survivor commented, the global authorities should question Hamas about why it happened.

The survivor mentioned he had not received any support from national authorities following his injury but hoped the host nation would assist Bipin's family.

Bipin's immediate family members have not released any statement to date.

Footage from the attack date showed him moving inside al-Shifa hospital in the urban area. His family received no indication of life for a twelve months, until the Israeli military shared a video of him in detention around November 2023.

Relatives described the material as "proof of life" just moments before the ceasefire deal was finalized, and were hoping for a miracle.

Currently in his native place of Bhimdutta municipality Bipin's loved ones are mourning after hearing news of his passing.

Family Response

The student's female relatives had gone to the United States to advocate for the freedom of captives, Bipin's cousin Kishore Joshi told media.

He says the household has no words to explain the sorrow. "His mother and sister are returning from America on Thursday. The father is unable to express the pain in words."

Meanwhile it remains uncertain when Bipin's body will be repatriated to his family.

Israel is undertaking required arrangements to repatriate his remains to Nepal, as it did for the other individuals who died, the country's government department said.
