Mikel Arteta Acknowledges Future Role Is Tied to Lifting Trophies.
On the eve of his six-year milestone as manager, Mikel Arteta has made it clear that his continued role with the club is directly connected to delivering trophies.
A Look Back: From Appointment to Present
The former Arsenal captain assumed control on 20 December 2019 and soon guided the team to an FA Cup victory within months. Yet, that initial silverware stands as his only major honor since succeeding Unai Emery.
“Absolutely,” Arteta responded when questioned about his future past 2027. “But it’s about today. And many things must occur in the coming months as well to earn the right.”
He will mark the six-year milestone with a fixture against Everton, the exact opponent Arsenal played just after his role was made public.
Present Challenges
As chasing Manchester City set to face West Ham in an earlier kick-off, Arsenal face being knocked off first place in the Premier League before their own match begins. This comes notwithstanding Arteta overseeing a squad that has suffered over 100 injuries over the course of last season.
He is tied down by a year and a half left on the contract he inked in 2024, however, he knows that he must deliver sooner rather than later.
Earning the Right
Arteta elaborated, emphasizing the ongoing need to prove his worth. “My belief is that a manager must deserve the right to be here tomorrow. And that is determined by how you react, how you talk here, how you go into the dressing room, the signal you send.”
Arteta continued, expressing gratitude for the unwavering support from the hierarchy, yet identifying the team's buy-in as most crucial. “At the end, the critical component are those players... During my tenure, I’ve seen just players with a degree of commitment, desire to learn and give the maximum to the team.”
Squad Setbacks
The team approaches the Everton match coping with a fresh setback. Defender Ben White has been declared unavailable with a strain that is anticipated to see him miss action for the coming weeks.
Confidence in the Path
Regardless of the availability issues and the immense scrutiny, Arteta is confident the club's “priorities and messaging” are profoundly distinct from when he first arrived.
He pointed to the squad's displays as a sign they are nearing their goal. “Consider the performances, all the historical marks we surpassed... We still haven't been able to do that [win trophies]. But that indicates the caliber we've reached.”
In closing, the manager stated, “That is a level that the Premier League has not seen before in the past. And we want to achieve even higher goals. And if we do that, I think we are on the right path to winning.”
