The beloved police drama AC-12 is officially returning for its seventh installment, confirmed by the broadcaster.

An upcoming six-episode series created by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Belfast in the coming months, according to the network.

Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the return, stating she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar added, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together next year."

The previous series wrapped up in 2021 with a final episode that drew in more than 17 million audience members. Speculation about a new season have been circulating ever since, but confirmation only arrived this week.

Fresh Obstacles for AC-12

The seventh season begins with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and rebranded as the new police oversight body, as revealed by production details.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain working to tackle misconduct within the police force.

Their work "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, these officers are assigned their "most sensitive case to date."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

A new character, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer known for takedowns of criminal networks, is accused of abusing his position to become a sexual predator.

Yet, this investigation might serve as a intentional diversion from a larger danger still operating in the background, the teaser suggested.

In a statement, the creator commented: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had countless fans track the ups and downs of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be coming back for a seventh season."

Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in the UK was thought to be over while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

Martin Compston described being part of the series as "a job of a lifetime".

"Beyond the show's success but the people I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he added.

Vicky McClure stated: "Obviously I'm very happy Line of Duty is returning! Eager to work with Jed, Compston and Adrian again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor noted: "While anticipating the unit days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together soon."

"Pleased with the announcement and looking forward to those mercurial twists and turns."

Series Legacy

Line of Duty launched in 2012 and evolved into one of the most popular television series of the past ten years, attracting notable actors such as Kelly Macdonald.

Broadcasters has not yet announced when the new season will hit screens.

The conclusion of series six brought the extended plot about the hunt for kingpin known as "H" to a close, and producers said at the moment there were no plans for further series.

However, the network announced on Tuesday that a seventh series is now being produced.
