Germany's Mayor Seriously Wounded in Knife Assault, Authorities Report
A newly-elected municipal leader in Germany's western region has been stabbed and suffered severe wounds close to her residence, authorities state.
Iris Stalzer, 57, is a affiliate of the centre-left Social Democratic party (SPD) and assumed the mayoral role of Herdecke in the regional state in September.
Area law enforcement say a significant response is in progress in the community. Officials indicate every possibility is being checked, but they are not ruling out a family connection.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz censured what he described as "a terrible crime", stating: "We are concerned about the survival of the newly elected mayor, Iris Stalzer, and wish for complete healing."
The SPD said its members were profoundly stunned by the attack.
Officials confirm her two children - a daughter, 17, and a 15-year-old son - made an emergency call to authorities at noon (11:00 BST).
The children were later taken away for questioning and forensic investigation. A journalist present witnessed a young person entering a law enforcement vehicle.
During the summer, there was an incident of domestic violence in the family, which was documented by authorities, security sources said.
