Diane Ladd, Famed For Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Has Died at Age 89.

This award-nominated performer Diane Ladd has died 89 years old.

This actress, whose credits included National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, left this world in her residence in Ojai, California. This announcement was shared in a statement by her child, Academy Award-winning star Laura Dern, her daughter.

Laura Dern, who starred with her mother in a number of films such as Wild at Heart, referred to her as “my incredible hero plus my precious gift as a mother”, stating that she was at her bedside during her final moments.

“She was the greatest grandmother, mother, daughter, performer, creative along with compassionate soul that seemed almost dreamlike,” she expressed. “We were blessed to have her. She is now with the angels.”

Beginnings and Major Success

Ladd’s early career saw minor parts on television series like The Fugitive and that decade saw her starring with the legendary Jack Nicholson in the classic Chinatown.

In the same year, the year 1974, she performed with actress Ellen Burstyn in Scorsese’s celebrated comedy drama the movie Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. Her acting brought Ladd her initial Oscar nod in the supporting actress category.

Later Decades

During the eighties, she starred in the dramatic film Black Widow plus humorous film National Lampoon’s holiday comedy and also took part in the show Alice, a comedy program based on her earlier movie.

In the subsequent decade, she received an additional Oscar nomination for supporting actress Oscar nomination for her role in David Lynch’s Wild at Heart, a cult classic in which she portrayed the parent of her biological child the character played by Dern. The following year she obtained a further nomination for her acting in Rambling Rose, another movie that also featured her daughter.

“This movie that Princess Diana chose as her absolutely favorite, and she invited us to the UK for a royal premiere and an event for us,” Ladd shared regarding Rambling Rose. “She sat with us, taking our hands, and crying, watching us perform.”

The nineties also saw roles in humorous films Cemetery Club, a film bringing her back with Ellen Burstyn, the movie Primary Colors, a satirical film, featuring John Travolta and Alexander Payne’s Citizen Ruth, a dark comedy where she acted as the mother of Dern another time. Those years also saw her score Emmy nominations for performances in the series Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman, Grace Under Fire and Touched by an Angel, a drama.

Collaborations with Daughter

She persisted in performing alongside her daughter in films blending humor and drama the film Daddy and Them, the David Lynch project Inland Empire, a surreal film and the series by Mike White satirical show Enlightened. She was also seen with Sandra Bullock, a star in 28 Days, a movie, Anthony Hopkins in that movie and Jennifer Lawrence in the film Joy.

Subsequent TV appearances featured Ray Donovan, a drama and Young Sheldon.

Filmmaking Ventures

Ladd also wrote and directed the humorous movie Mrs Munck which starred herself and former husband Bruce Dern, an actor. “Bruce is a talented star,” she mentioned. “It was a privilege to guide him on a project. In fact, I’m the only woman ever to direct her ex-husband. I humorously say: ‘I say ladies, should you desire retribution, guide your former spouse.’ However, I’m joking.”

Personal Connections

She happened to be a relative of Tennessee Williams, who she referred to as “a great influence throughout my life”.

Back in 2018, doctors misdiagnosed Ladd with a pulmonary condition and told she only had half a year left but made a full recovery once her daughter moved her to another medical facility.

“If you can take your pain and avoid letting it accumulate like a sore or something, instead apply it to explore, to make the path clearer for yourself and others, then you are succeeding,” Ladd remarked.
