American Attack on Venezuela Stokes Anxieties of Potential Danish Territory Acquisition.

The latest American strike in Venezuela and the seizure of its leader have renewed worry regarding Washington's designs on Greenland. Members of the former president's base have allegedly turned their attention to the vast landmass in the wake of the operations in the southern hemisphere.

Provocative Messages and Diplomatic Backlash

Only a short time after the commencement of the Caracas campaign, a well-known right-wing commentator, who is married to a high-ranking White House adviser, posted a suggestive map. The graphic showed Greenland draped with the stars and stripes, accompanied by single-word message: "SOON."

This blatant suggestion to absorb the resource-abundant land, which is a member of the NATO alliance, triggered swift and strong criticism from Danish representatives.

"We are close allies and should continue to work together as such. American security is equally Greenland’s and our security," declared the Copenhagen's envoy to the United States. "Our nation and the US collaborate to guarantee security in the Arctic."

The ambassador additionally pointed out that the kingdom had significantly boosted its defence spending recently, allocating a substantial amount expressly for Northern and regional defence. "Furthermore, we demand complete respect for the sovereign borders of the Kingdom of Denmark," he emphasized.

Administrative Moves and Strategic Goals

The tensions were additionally exacerbated by the recent appointment of a Southern governor as a special envoy to Greenland. The appointee had publicly thanked the president, stating it was an "honour" to work in a volunteer capacity to "make Greenland a part of the US."

After the events in Venezuela, this representative praised the administration's actions, connecting it to the broader "war on drugs."

Since returning to office, the American leader has consistently unnerved transatlantic allies with his expressed interest in Greenland. The island is considered critically strategic for defence and potential mineral exploitation. It already houses the most northerly US military base.

Leaving the Door Open to Military Action

In a significant television appearance, the leader declined to exclude the use of military force to acquire Greenland. This stance comes during intensifying global competition in the Arctic. "I don't rule it out. I don't say I'm going to do it, but I don't rule out anything... We need Greenland very badly," he remarked.

He characterized Greenland as having a "tiny amount of people, which we’ll look after, and we’ll cherish them... But we need that for global security."

Growing Friction and Indigenous Opposition

In reaction to this constant "drumbeat" of intent, Danish security agency took the unprecedented step last month of classifying the United States as a "potential threat."

The leaders of Denmark and Greenland delivered a unified and stern rebuke: "We have said it very clearly before. Now we say it again... You must not annex other countries."

Public opinion in Greenland shows a nuanced picture. While a vast majority of the island's residents desire self-rule from Copenhagen, there is simultaneously scant desire to become part of the United States. The island has had the legal right to seek independence for many years.

Analyst Assessment: A Plausible Scenario?

Some experts are increasingly re-evaluating the likelihood of such a action. One thinktank analyst specializing in defence admitted she had once dismissed the sabre-rattling but was "now not so sure."

"It wouldn't be that hard for the US to deploy a few hundred or a couple thousand troops inside of Greenland, and it's unclear to me which power could do anything about it," she concluded.
